Kato Doloi, lies at the heart of the Municipality of Avia, overlooking the Messinian gulf and behind it, the Taygetos mountain range. This is a typical Greek village, friendly people, a little kafenaion and the best olive oil in the world. The picture postcard fishing port of Kitries and the beach are only 6 km away. Here you can safely swim, snorkel and sunbathe, either by your self or at one the many beach bars that are here. Nearby are the famous resort areas of Stoupa and Kardamyli and the beach of Kalogria with its invigorating springs running into the sea is also close by. This truly is unknown Greece, ideal for long country walks, or for walking in the foothills of Mount Taygetos, particularly in Spring and autumn when the flowers are at their best and the temperature is ideal. Guided and self guided walks are available as is mountain biking and these can all be booked separately when here. Taygetos is the second highest mountain on the Greek mainland and on its summit Profitis Ilias on the 19th of July each year there is a festival where thousands of people gather to celebrate and watch the sun rise the next day. .Castles, towers and ancient ruins are here for those interested in history. The historic port of Kitries has links back to the Greek revolution when the port was controlled by the Mavromichalis family, sadly the castle complex that was here is no more but there are many other historic buildings. Kitries was mentioned by Pausaunias on his travels around Greece in 2 AD. It has links with nearby Zarnata castle and was known by Pausaunais as Gerenia. The nearby village of Stavropigio has tavernas, bars and grills serving excellent souvlaki and local wine, the centre of the region of Avia is Kambo and here you will find more excellent tavernas serving lamb from the oven, fish and much, much more. Dancing and singing will be spontaneous and you can enjoy yourself late into the night or early morning. The cosmopolitan city of Kalamata with its unique shops and bars is only 25 km away and if you are a steam engine buff, then take a look at the old railway station complete with carriages and steam engines from a more glamorous era. Kalamata is famous for its PDO extra virgin olive and the press at Doloi is one of the finest. The region is also famous for its excellent eating olives and figs, so take the opportunity to buy some and take them home.
