Portugal
Portugal is the oldest European nation-state, having been in existence since about 1200, centuries before neighboring Spain or France became unified states. In the fourteenth century, Portugal began a period of exploration and achieved an empire that within a hundred years literally spanned the globe.
Portugal now has two autominous island regions which are the Azores and Madeira, he mainland is divided into several Regions which each have a number of Provinces.
Undoubtedly the most popular region for holidays is the Southern part of the country known as the Algarve, further North the terrain is more hilly and some towns are more industrial. There are places for holidays on the Western coastline around the Lisbon Coast, Costa Prata and the most northern coastline which is known as the Costa Verde.

Island Communities Azores and Madeira
The Mid Atlantic ridge is an underwater chain of volcanic rock which runs the length of the Atlantic and surfaces in a few places. One of these the Azores is a group of nine islands some 900 miles off the Portuguese coast.
The environment is beautiful and natural with green fields, hedge rows and native wild flowers.
The island outcrops produce powerful surf Sao Miguel in particular has become a holiday centre for surfing.
Other activities are Whale Watching, Swimming with Wild Dolphin's, Walking, Treking and Mountain Biking.
The island of Madeira is a well established travel location and many thousands of tourists return year after year.
Madeira offers a pleasant climate year round with wonderful scenery and places to visit.
